Sherlock Holmes and the Case of American Creamy Sauce

So in our most recent episode (#9: Finger Lickin' Good - Junkfood), Dana noted that the cheesy flavor of Cheetos did not test well in China so the two flavors that were first introduced were "Zesty Japanese Steak" and the elusive "Savory American Cream."
BUT WHAT THE HECK IS AMERICAN CREAM?
We thought maybe it was country gravy. Very creamy and very American. Sarah from Germany wrote in and suggested:
In many countries, like Germany, ranch dressing is called "American dressing". Also, Cool Ranch Doritos over here are called "Cool American".
Oooo, a very wise guess. With a bit more digging, we finally found out what "Savory American Cream" is. According to a New York Times article back in 1994, the HOTLY-CONTESTED American Creamy Sauce flavor is essentially...
...buttered popcorn.

I can't decide whether buttered popcorn is more or less awful than I was imagining.
