On the topic of the plural of octopus, here is the closest thing to Webster's official take on this. (Also, I totally advocate checking out the other entries of this video series. They're awesome.)

Long story short, Octopuses = OK. Octopi = OK. Octopodes = OK, but expect odd looks.

The section on window washers reminded me of an interesting story I heard on the radio a few months ago. About 90% of Chicagos window washers all come from the same small town in Mexico.
