On the topic of the plural of octopus, here is the closest thing to Webster's official take on this. (Also, I totally advocate checking out the other entries of this video series. They're awesome.)

Long story short, Octopuses = OK. Octopi = OK. Octopodes = OK, but expect odd looks.
