164: What the Folk?

DIRECT DOWNLOAD  /  ITUNES  /  RSS

What is folk and what counts as folklore? We get folked up by imbibing a lot of trivia nuggets about stories, rituals, and music passed down from generation to generation! How come every nursery rhyme seems to have a hidden murderous and/or political origin? Colin goes on a Fool's Errand and opens our eyes to hazing and camp pranks that keep getting passed down. Get folkin' excited for animal proverb origins, and a *challenging* Greek mythology quiz.

When you all were talking about the Greek gods and you brought up Phobos and Deimos, I was so excited that I knew it immediately! These are the names of the two moons of Mars!

Regarding fool's errands: when a mom wanted to send her child to the neighbor cause she needed some peace and quiet she would send her to bring "teiens me ache" (not sure I am spelling correctly) which in Spanish means "keep me here" and the nice neighbor would know to tell the kid to do something while she went to get it.

I really enjoyed your folklore episode. Something which I find interesting is folklore which is specific to a region. An example is the Australian drop bear - a vicious native related to the koala which has been curiously ignored by science. Every Australian knows about these terrifying creatures but you won't find out about them in books - the knowledge is passed down orally through the generations.

I worked in a sheet metal shop years ago. We would either send the new guy for offset drill bits or centerline. Our stock manager would help keep things going. If, for instance, I sent someone for a 1/4" offset drill bit, he would tell them we were out, then send them back to ask me if 3/8" would work instead. If you asked him for 100 feet of centerline, he tell you that we were out of the 100-foot lengths, then tell you to go find out if two 50-foot lengths work, and so on. We could keep a new guy running back and forth for ten minutes or more.
