Hey guys,

On this episode, Karen mentioned that she is going to run the "Beer Mile". I thought you might be interested in a tradition at Rice University (my Alma Mater) called Beer Bike.

Each year, every Residential College (think Harry Potter house - mine was Lovett...EOL RRF) puts together a Men's Team, Women's Team, and Alumni Team (10 people each), and race around a track that was paved explicitly for this purpose.

It's called "Beer Bike" because in the old days, people would chug beer and then bike around the track. As times have change, there are now designated "Chuggers" and "Bikers" and the Chuggers chug water (men chug 24 oz and bike 1 mile, women 12 oz and 2/3 mile). Since Rice is a wet campus, some people over 21 do chug beer out of choice, but, as Karen mentioned, that is really hard, so they make it super flat first (by microwaving it and stuff). Also, there are some (especially during the Alumni race) who bike and then chug for another biker, which is called an "Iron Man".

It has turned into essentially an all day event, with day drinking, water balloon fights, and general merriment. And, since the Alumni come back for it, it is essentially a Homecoming.

You can find more information here and some videos here and here (the actually biking is near the ends of the videos).

Overall, it's pretty epic :)

Just by chance, this morning I was rifling through a history trivia book (On the John University- World History) and flipped to a random page and this is what I saw- The Nine Greek Muses. The first is Calliope- the MUSE of EPIC POETRY. Thought you might find this interesting, Chris. (I love serendipity)

As an expatriated Italian, I couldn't help but cringe a little when I heard you pronounce Mt. Cervino as "Servino". The pronunciation is closer to "chair vino". As a rule, the letter C is pronounced as "CH" when followed by an i or e (cello, ciao) or as "K" when followed by anything else (casa), but never as "S".

Thanks for the great podcast! As a little trivia bonus I'll add one more thing. Cervino literally means "little deer".
