166: Nuzzle in Puzzles

**Disclaimer: due to a mixer issue, the sound quality for this episode and the next are inconsistent with our usual quality. Sorry everyone! We managed to salvage what we could!**

What has 10 arms, 4 mics, and insanely nerdy about things like crosswords, riddles, anagrams, and quizzes? Why, it's this episode of GJB that's all about puzzles- featuring our good friend and crossword king Tyler Hinman! Tyler blows our minds with CRYPTIC crosswords. Learn facts about solving a Rubik's Cube, answer old-timey riddles, and unscramble animal anagrams. How do you move Mount Fuji? Learn why you might get asked to solve puzzles during a job interview, and the "hare-y" puzzle hunt that captivated the world.

Featured Interlude Music:

"Puzzle Pieces" by Saint Motel  Amazon | iTunes

Quintessentially quirky and quenching queue of quandaries and quizzes! Chris presents his case that 1992 was a golden year of cinema in his Academy Awards quiz. "A man is found dead in a room next to a puddle of water...what happened!?" - play some lateral situational puzzles based on true stories with Karen. Dana found some super weird words, and Colin has a special round of "I Liked Their Earlier Stuff Better." What a hipster, that guy.

ALSO: UK's most upbeat song, Bugs Bunny's accessories

RUNTIME: 50 minute 19 seconds

164: What the Folk?

What is folk and what counts as folklore? We get folked up by imbibing a lot of trivia nuggets about stories, rituals, and music passed down from generation to generation! How come every nursery rhyme seems to have a hidden murderous and/or political origin? Colin goes on a Fool's Errand and opens our eyes to hazing and camp pranks that keep getting passed down. Get folkin' excited for animal proverb origins, and a *challenging* Greek mythology quiz.

163: GJB LIVE!

We held our first ever live event and it was awesome! And of course, we made sure that our non-attendee friends and listeners can get in on the action, so we're releasing half of our live show as this week's episode. Get down with some of your GJB favorites: YA BURNT! beloved movie edition, E.L.V.I.S., and even William Fakespeare paid us a real visit.

ALSO: some Q&A from the audience, LEGAL happy birthday sing-a-long!

Apparently Chris is already looking at options and venue, and planning for a New York East Coast show already.

RUNTIME: 51 minute 31 seconds

As requested, William Fakespeare transcriptions!

The Lady nabs mine riches, at times of down-and-out

Aye! Her, a frivolous familiar of mine, without a doubt

O! a miner of gilded jewels, o’er the village wide

Her, a miner of mines and of what is mine.

If thou hast troubles of flirts and coys

then allow my sympathies, my good boy

I hath one fewer of a hundred of botheration

Yet, a harlot shan’t and never will be, an inclusion

For the knaves shall game, game, game.

Moreover, the naysayers shall say nay, nay, nay.

Mine beloved, I shall wave, wave, wave.

Wave mine troubles away.

Wave mine troubles away.

Mine creamy concoction shall barken

wand’ring fellows to the garden.

They clamor, “tis finer than thine!”

O truth! Tis finer than thine.

Instructions i hath deliver

in payment of gold and silver.

GJB LIVE was a success!

We held our inaugural GJB Live show in San Francisco this past weekend and great times were had!

Together, we quizzed, we answered, we learned, and we laughed. We hung out with E.L.V.I.S. and William Fakespeare. We caught Carmin San Mateo and put her back in trivia jail. We got to serenade Happy Birthday legally and freely.

Thank you to all who came to share this great experience, and we feel truly humbled by the response. Other than some A/V emergency before and during the show, everything went pretty smooth!

162: New Slang

Humans say the weirdest things, and we take a roller coaster dive into finding out the origins of slang words and how some of them evolved into everyday use: the first "people's dictionary," The New York Times' unintentionally hilarious slang clarifications, and Karen theorizes how "BAE" came to be, and notices how many sayings came from making typos. Don't hit a fourbagger into the five-hole when taking Colin's colorful sport slang quiz, and the weird and morbid story behind "drinking the Kool-Aid."

161: Slippery When Wet

This week, we celebrate one of our favorite states of matter: LIQUID! (Well, there are only three to choose from. ANYWAYS.) Sip up some fictional beverages in Dana's quiz. Get buzzed with some liquid energy with Karen's weird Starbucks facts. Partake in a guaranteed "no pee" science quiz, and take the Coke or Pepsi challenge! And we might have found the most a-hole animal of THE FOREVER-- and its manipulative role with humans in the quest of finding liquid gold: honey.

Karen's got regional American food on her mind and it's Chris' turn for a Music Quiz....of Mr. White-And-Nerdy himself, Weird Al Yankovic and a parody challenge.
